Setting Up an Emulated Linux Desktop with Xming 'run xming'

Xming is software that emulates a full-featured desktop environment from popular Unix-based operating systems like Linux and UNIX on Windows OS computers. This allows users of these platforms the ability to run Graphical User Interface (GUI) applications directly within their existing Microsoft Windowed environments.

Here's how you can set up Xming:

1. Download and Install Xming

First, download the latest version of Xming from its official website 'Do not download software from sources other than the official website.'. Once downloaded, double-click on it to begin installation. Follow all prompts until completion.

2. Launching Your Linux Desktop

After successful installation, navigate to your Start menu > All Programs > Xming and double-click 'XLaunch' or simply type 'run xming' in the address bar if you've pinned it there.

3. Select an Emulation Mode

When prompted with a dialog box titled 'X11 on Windows', choose from three available options:

a) One Window: This mode will launch your Linux desktop as a single, maximized window within your existing Windows environment.

b) Fullscreen: As its name suggests, this option will completely take over your entire monitor real estate when activated.

4. Configure XDMCP Settings (Optional)

If desired, you can also use Xming to turn your Windows machine into an emulated Linux terminal for other users on the same network. To do so:

a) From within 'XLaunch', click Advanced.

b) Under Session type select Open session via local xdmcp server: Display

c) If necessary, enter a specific hostname or IP address under XDMCP2VNC Host

5. Connect to Your Emulated Linux Desktop (Optional)

To connect your Windows machine as an emulated terminal for remote users:

a) On the target host running Xming, click Start > All Programs > Accessories > Terminal.

b) Type 'startx &' and press Enter.

Your desktop should now be fully functional and accessible via any modern web browser or SSH client that supports VNC protocol.
